“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime”. Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean studies (KUFOS) is an autonomous public funded-institution established on 20th November 2010. KUFOS is the first fisheries university in the country. The headquarters of KUFOS with its enchanting blue building stands in harmony with the greenery at Panangad, 12 km away from Kochi city, along NH-47. It provides high quality instructional programmes in fisheries, ocean sciences and allied subjects. The University now has 75 acres in the headquarters at Panangad, 50 acres at Fisheries station, Puduveypu and 10 acres at Thiruvallom near Vizhinjam. With a view to producing technocrats of high calibre, we provide highly qualified faculty, full fledged infrastructure facility and good linkages with reputed national and international institutes The academic excellence is intended to be attained by undertaking graduate and post graduate teaching and research programmes in emerging disciplines of fisheries science .With a view to meeting the requirement of state and national priorities, we are introducing specialized courses in the needy areas thereby creating professionals and experts. Results of research emerging from various disciplines leading to successful technologies need to be disseminated to the endusers at the grass root level.
As part of accreditation, Peer Review Team (PRT) from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi visited the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies at its Head Quarters, Panangad, Fisheries station at Puduveypuand the varsity adopted village Puthenvelikara. In the meeting held on 22.08.2016, Dr.A.Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, KUFOS presented the consolidated report of activities and achievements of the University during the last five years. Dr.K.V.Jayachandran, Director of Research presented a report of Research and Exhibition activities of KUFOS since the inception. The PRT in the process of assuring acceptable institutional quality and a tool for improving educational standards verified all relevant documents since University’s inception , physical facilities including laboratories and equipments for teaching as well as research vested with various Schools, newly constructed academic block, Public Aquarium, Museum and hostel facilities at the headquarters. The team also had direct interaction with the students, teaching and non-teaching staff as well as alumni. At Puthuveypu today, the team evaluated the progress of the first ‘Vannamie Shrimp’ hatchery in Kerala its demonstration ponds and the mangrove rehabilitation centre. The team also had a visit to the Varsity adopted fishing village ‘Puthenvelikara’ to interact with the successful entrepreneurs in fin fish cage as well as pen culture, ornamental fish farming and integrated fish farming. Biradar, Former Joint Director, Central Institute
The food entrepreneurs’ conclave was held at Kerala university of fisheries and ocean studies (KUFOS), Panangad on 18th August 2016 jointly conducted by AFST(i), Cochin Chapter and KUFOS. During his inaugural address, the Vice chancellor of KUFOS urged students to develop entrepreneurship capability during their professional study programme. He said, many food industries have grown up immensely in India since last decade and hence there are lot many opportunities for young entrepreneurs. The government of India has sanctioned 100% FDI in the food sector business. The conclave was to motivate young entrepreneurs for developing innovative ideas in food science and technology field.DR. DD Nambudiri,President AFST(i),cochin chapter who presided asked young entreprenuers to come forward with innovative ideas in food business sector. He emphasized on the aspects of novel ideas in food technology. Dr. V. M Victor George, Registrar, KUFOS delivered the welcome speech by pointing out that, this conclave will give different dimensions and creative minds for the budding entrepreneurs. Sri A.S Shenoy, Former resident director, MPEDA, Tokyo felicitated the function and said that students should acquire knowledge and transform into innovative business ideas. The function was concluded by Dr. Sanu Jacob, Secretary AFST(i) cochin chapter by delivering the vote of thanks.Nine resourced persons who are successful food entreprenuers ,technical experts and business financial advisers made their presentations in the conclave.Conclave was attended by 158 registered participants.
As part of the celebrations of the World Environment Day at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Adv. A.M. Arif, Hon. Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Aroor unveiled the logo of Nature Club of the Students Union. Prof. Dr. A. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, KUFOS delivered the Keynote Address. “The earth is under the grip of climate change and global warming as evident from the recent floods in Chennai” said M.L.A. He also said that the implementation and enforcement of the Wetland Act needs to be strengthened. Prof. Ramachandran, KUFOS VC in his keynote address stressed that in-spite of the implementation of the Environment Protection Act of 1986, several environmental issues are being reported from around the country and this would lead to catastrophic impacts. Dr. M. K. Sajeevan (Associate Patron), Mr. Adarsh (Chairman, Students Union), Mr. Praveen (Secretary, Students Union), Ms. Amrutha (Convenor, Nature Club) and Mr. Vidhu Raj (Joint Convenor, Nature Club) also spoke on the occasion.
